Can one start working before EAD card arrive?

Can a person start working after EAD is approved but has not received the card? I found from previous discussions that the time it takes between approval and receiving card in mail varies from a few days to sometimes 2-3 months.

Also, I\'m assuming the date printed on the card starts from the approval date? In this case, if it takes 2 months to receive the card, does this mean the beneficiary loses those time or is there any way to recapture the time?
