My wife is doing residency on J-1. She delivered a baby recently and she got a month off from work. She would like to take couple more months off and spend some quality time with kid. But the problem with this is that she will go off the cycle in her Residency. That means, she would have to get two months extension and that may not be a problem to program and ecfmg. But now she may not be eligible to go for Fellowship because of off cycle and may have to go back to home country for two years (if we opt not to apply for waiver). Is there a way that she can stay in the country for that off cycle year and get into fellowship year after and continue her J-1?
Can J-1 be valid with a break?
