My friend recently got an email from his lawyer that since the priority date was current, he can file for I485 (from the USCIS case update and processing times pages, it seems that the I140 is about to be approved - they haven't updated the pages in a while).
Anyways, the thing is that he is outside the USA on leave from his employer for personal reasons. His H1B has expired so he cannot come back to America. He wants to know if he can file for the I485 from the local US embassy/consulate in India?
Can someone advise if this is possible? If not, will the I485 only be filed once he is back in the US?
