My nonimmigrant visa is F1 before. Because I changed my status at school to be pending permanant resident, The ISSS people at the campus said I can't work as a research assistant until I get EAD. But I did some research on line and it is said that I can work on campus no more than 20 hours a week during this time. I am really confused. Can anybody help me to understand whether I can work on campus or not?

You cannot work till you have an EAD, which gives you the basis for employment in the country. Once you file for a green card, your F1 visa status is technically about to die and be replaced by a green card, once USCIS makes a determination that you are eligible for green card. You want to wait for your EAD to appear which is usually within 90 days of filing before you can continue working on campus.

You cannot work, only if you weren't filing for a green card, could you continue to work on campus. However, the great thing is once you have your EAD, you can work 100 hours a week, no limitation on your ability to work and be a student. Don't get sidetracked by the small issues, focus on the larger picture.
