Can I use voluntary working experince for LC?

I would like to file a regular LC under EB2 now. My job requires Master degree + 1 year experince. I had worked 1 year for a research group in a university on a voluntary basis, would it be legal to use this experience to meet the "1 year experience" requirement? Thanks!

I am no Lawyer, but when people say "experience" they generally mean full time PAID work experience.
