I have a friend over there and I want to visit him for a day and then take flight to Asia. Does anyone know if I need a Canadian visa for this? Thanks

Thank you very much, yosemas.

From the wensite, it says:

Many people do not require a visa to visit Canada. These include:

... ...

persons lawfully admitted to the United States for permanent residence who are in possession of their alien registration card (Green card) or can provide other evidence of permanent residence.

... ...

Dude, You are NOT one of them, so you absolutely need a visa to visit Canada. Pending AOS and AP DOES NOT signify permanent residence.

You are correct; I mistakenly take “possession” as “process“.

Could I be allowed for one night stay over if I have the flight ticket to Asia or I just have to give up the trip?

Sure as long as you don't leave the airport or the transit area to be precise! :)

Just go for a visa, been there done that, it is extremely easy. If you are in LA/SF/Seattle, just walk in the morning before the counters open, and if you have all your documents right, they will call you back in the evening.

If you have the time, send it in via post.

good luck and have a safe trip!
