Can I travel outside the US while my OPT application is pending?

Hi,

I am graduating on May 3rd. I sent my OPT application documents and i received official Receipt Notice (Form I-797) from USCIS. A person in our international student center told me that i can travel to India if i get that receipt from USCIS ( even if my OPT application is pending ). I have a job offer and i am waiting for my OPT to join. Is it safe for me to travel to India while my OPT application is pending ? If So, what are the documents i need to carry with me ?
