Help!!!! Can I travel and re-entry with J1 after applying to 2year rule waiver?

Please help! I need some input
I have a J1 good for 8 more months. I want to go for Christamas break home. I have applied to my waiver and most likely will get it before Christmas. With a J1 valid and DS2019 valid for 8 more months and a waiver in my hands can I travel and re-entry with No problem ? I've been told by my program officer that after applying to the waiver my J1 is not good for re-entry.... :( is this true??
Thanks!!!

Once you have obtained your waiver, it will not be possible for you to extend/reapply your j1 visa. But since your current J1 visa is valid for 8 months, I think you should be OK with your travel.

That should not be a problem. I was in a similar situation earlier and re-validation or re-entry was not a problem. Do you have a valid visa stamp already? However, there is some risk involved (depending on your home country), if you have to go for stamping. But with a waiver in hand it should be okay.
Good luck!
