Can I Stay for one year outside US

Yes. However, if you return in 1 year and 1 day you lose your PR status, unless you have Reentry Permit (then you have up to 2 years from approval date).

I have a similar question

Hello, I need your advise.

I will be quiting my existing job (due to personal reasons) next month. I want to travel to india and stay for 6 months along with my wife and my 4 month old Son.

1. I will be vacating my rented apartment and keep my belongings in Storage
2. I will send AR-11 for me and my wife with a friends address
3. I will change my postal address to my friends address
4. I will keep my bank account
5. My family and I will return to US before end of the year from India and start searching for a new job
6. I will file 2005 taxes next year as usual

Will my plan cause any issues with my and my wife's PR status (my son is born in US)? Do I need to take any actions in this reg.?

Greatly Appreciate your help

Yes. You are good to go assuming that both of you are permanent residents. Don't forget to come before 6 months so that you can maintain your continous residence requirement for citizenship (if you want to become one). Otherwise you can come back before 1 year.

Yes, We both are permanant residents

Thank you asrivang!

Yes, My wife and myself became Permanant Residents in Q1 2004 and I will complete 1+ year with my employer who filed my GC.

Yes, I will make sure that we return within 6 months.

Thanks again for your help!

you can stay out on your GC for a year but try to come back before 12 months time is over, if u want to saty longer then that then get a travel documents before departing from USA.

1+ year stay outside USA possible with some visa?

I'd like to stay outside USA for 2 years to take care of my husband.
He is a USA citizen and works abroad.
I'm now sick of coming back and forth every 6 months. It's been many years.

Is there any way I can stay outside USA for over 1 year?
Can I do it with some kind of student visa or other visa?
What are the ways to do it?

Please, reply in detail if possible.

Thank you very much.

Are you in US now and what is your US status (if any)?

permanent residence

I'm sorry I forgot to mention that I'm a permanent resident now but this is my syster's case. She is permanent resident too. She was going back and forth from US to Italy to support her husband who has been working in Italy for a long time.
Any suggestions that she can stay in Italy for a long time, over 1 year without all the periodic frequent travelings between two countries?

Next time, you are in US, apply for Reentry permit with a valid family reason of yours. You have to leave US only after receiving approved reentry permit and will allow max upto 2 years.
Next time after 2 years, It's difficult to get further/subsequent reentry permits for every 2 years.

Any other way around?

Is there any other way than reentry permit?
I heard somewhere that if you get a student visa or work visa you can stay for over 1 year.

That's what I thought.

And my sys just didn't get it.

All she wants is to stay with the family without all the hassles, travels, and expenses.

So you are saying that a maximum 2 year reentry permit is the best she can get?
