Can I reschedule an interview for next week?

Hi, first thanks to all who contribute to the forum. Extremely helpful!

I have an interview scheduled for late next week (the process has been very fast) and after reading the checklist for documentation to take with me, I am worried that I'll be inadequately prepared. If I courier a letter requesting a reshedule that arrives 2-3 days before my interview date, will they be aware of the request in time? I realize requesting a new date will delay everything on my part, but I'd rather be fully prepared and don't want to waste anyone's time or cause confusion.

Many thanks.

You can do that. But never know if your interview will get rescheduled on time.

But what do you need to be prepared? Share with us what is your concern and we can help you. Is your case 5 years or 3 years marriage based? Lots of people are nervous for no apparent reason..if you tell us what preparation you are worried about, we can help you!

Thanks for the quick response! Here's what I'm missing from JohnnyCash's list that is stickied:

-Tax transcripts: I have copies of my returns (and W-2 etc.) but nothing from the IRS. I can potentially have them faxed in time.

-Copy of a citation I received on the subway. I have a copy of the check to pay the fine, and I might be able to get a copy from the Transit Adjudication Bureau on Monday. I'm just not sure if they have those files and how long it will take to access them.

-New York driver license. I thought I'd be able to get one before the interview, but travel prevented me from doing so, and it'll take about two weeks to receive it (though maybe they'll provide me with some documentation). I have roommates and am not on the utility bills, so it's just cell phone and credit card bills, bank statements, and proof of employment that establish my residency. My other major concern is that I have an unexpired driver license from another state even though I've lived in NY for a long while. Should have taken care of it before now, but I don't have a car, and as a non-citizen I haven't voted or served on a jury. It'll get surrendered at the DMV, obviously.

Thanks again!

If your case is 5 year based, tax transcripts are not needed if you do not answer Yes to those Tax questions, have no significant number or long
overseas trip.

For driver license, can you get a non-driving state photo ID first if it is fast?

By the way, after interview, you are given 30 days of time
to provide additional evidence if they required it. In yoru case, you
don't have to wrooy about tax transcripts or original citation
need more than 30 days to get. And mpst likely they will not
request any firther evidence because I do not see anything major

So I think you should make current appointment to save you big time

It occurs to me that the New York DMV will probably give me a temporary documentation of some sort, but I'm not sure that it'll be a photo ID.

If you don't drive, you can tell them you don't have one. They can ask for utility bills etc to prove your residency if they need it.

My officer didn't even look at my license. I think you should go to the interview and respond to any evidence needed if required.

Do this, go to ny DMV and get a temporary license which is what is given to you.

If you read the interview letter, it specifically asks not to reschedule the interview even if you do not have the documents they requested.

Most likely you will be only asked for your passport but get a state Id from the DMV as well. If I were you, I would not reschedule the interview.

You can request that the interview be rescheduled, but it almost certainly will not be rescheduled for one week after the original interview date. Most likely it will be about 2 months. The reason is that after a re-schedule request the file goes back to the end of the queue of cases waiting to be assigned an interview date.

Also, it is possible to get a New York State ID card from the DMV: it looks exactly like a driver's license but does not grant any driving privileges. The advantage is that you don't have to take any written or driving tests to get it. I had one when I lived in New York (I did not have a car and did not drive back then).

Thanks so much everyone. I'll attend the interview as scheduled. I'm going to the DMV tomorrow so hopefully I'll have a temporary ID to show along with all of my other identification. Then I'll respond to any requests they may have for further info. Thanks again!

An update and a question. Things went smoothly. I explained to the IO that I didn't have the court disposition but gave copies of the paid check for the fine. The IO said that would most likely be sufficient but would need a supervisor's approval, so I don't need to get the disposition unless specifically asked for it. It's now been a month without either an oath letter or a request for additional information, and my onlione case status is still "Interview and Testing". Based on the timelines I've seen for other NYC applicants, it seems like a month is about the maximum wait after the interview before an oath letter is received, but given that mine needed an additional approval, how long should I expect to wait before a decision is made? Probably no way to estimate. I just want to know if I should follow up at some point. Many thanks!
