I need to apply for a Re-entry Permit but would like to go to California (instead of home state[Maryland]) for my Biometerics.

If I just provide a relatives address in California on the I-131 form, would that work???

Thanks!!!!

You need to provide your own address on the I-131 form.

But once you get the biometrics appointment notice, you can go for walk-in biometrics anywhere.

Thanks for the quick reply Jackolantern.

Upon doing some investigation on the subject I called up the USCIS 800 line to confirm what you are proposing and had a chat with the Cust. Serv. agent.

He provided me contradictory information. He gave me two options:
1). Upon getting a the biometerics appointment put in an official request to the USCIS to move the same to another jurisdiction/state. And he did advise that this could delay the process by some time.

2). Provide the California address on the original I-131 application. I asked him if I need to file in another document to notify USCIS of change of address from Maryland to California. And he said all I needed to do was put in the California address on the form.

Taking the Appointment letter to another USCIS location in a different state; as per this agent would not work.

Because these things are so tricky/involved, I am a bit hesitant to take his word as is.

Let me know of you thoughts please.

Thanks!!!

You are correct to be hesitant. The people on the USCIS phone are notorious for giving incorrect and inconsistent information. Call up tomorrow and you'll get a different answer. Call next week, you'll get even another different answer.

Put your permanent (Maryland) address on the form. They'll deliver the biometrics notice to your MD address, but then you can attend the appointment anywhere else.

Hi Jackolantern,

I am trying to see how to work it out...

I already have the tickets to fly into MD early next week for the Biometerics. I haven't dropped off the REP application as I am trying to time it right.

Do we get the biometerics appointment notice within 2 weeks of dropping the application? Or, is the appointment scheduled within 2 weeks of dropping the application?

Also, should I try to get an INFOPASS for the USCIS facility closest to me on the West Coast? Seems like I can get through to them only if I have a schedule appointment or an INFOPASS appointment. I am hoping I don't have to take two trips to their facility as they are about 8 hours away from me.

Also, is it a big issue if we miss the scheduled appointment date/time.

Thanks!!!!

The biometrics notice normally arrives 2-5 weeks after you submit the form. The appointment should be around 1 to 3 weeks after the notice is delivered, but once you have the notice in hand you can go for a walk-in before the official appointment date.

If you can't make the appointment date, and didn't do a walk-in before the appointment date, you can usually get a walk-in within a few days after the official appointment date. Later than that, and they'll probably reject the reentry permit.

Infopass can't do anything for you now. All you can do now is submit the app and wait for the next step.

Thanks for providing me the timeline details. I guess gotta keep that in mind while planning out my trip.

Are these the timelines for non-Expedited service? I somehow thought the we could get both the things done within a month of application..
