Can I leave USA before I get my EAD?

Hi,
I applied for my EAD under L2 in Dec'04. I have not received my EAD. Can I leave USA for a short trip? I read somewhere that if you leave before you receive your EAD or interim EAD, your application will be deemed abandoned. Is this correct?

As far as I remember only Change of Status applications are considered abandoned when leaving the US before receiving the Change of Status. Since it has been a while since you filed your application you might get an idea where the application is by looking up the case number using the online status system at uscis.gov.
