Can I just walk in for FP?

You need to at least have a request to do a fingerprint. Many people have tried to do a walk in prior to the indicated appointment date. I doubt it will work other wise.

Maybe someone who tried will post their experience.

Didn't work for me. I was told "your application was received only one month ago,...........".
 
If you just applied recently without anything else that won't work, because anyway you must wait for the 90 day time window.

To do FP you need an appointment, with no appointment you can't take your FP. You can walk in in order to do your FP before the date of the appointment, I did it almost a month before the date of the appointment and that helped to have my check name cleared before my interview.
