I decide to file the I-485 by myself because my attorney seems not work on my case after I paid him. I want to know what I should send besides the forms. I would be really appreciated if anybody could give me any inputs!

Thanks!

Susan

First. Get the I-485 form from INS website "http://www.ins.usdoj.gov/graphics/formsfee/index.htm". Then read the instructions to findout what is required. You need not send anything other than what is asked in the form. Yes, you can file 485 by yourself. I have been doing my EAD renewal etc by myself. 485 is an application filed by you based on the Labor and 140 you received through your sponsoring company. You can optionally have an attorney represent you. But that is not required as long as you can file the application with proper fee and other things mentioned on the form. Actually, even attorney looks through the form to figure out what is the required documentation.

Good luck.

Hi Kiran, a quick question.

You said that your are doing your EAD on your own. I would like to know when you filed your renewal application at VSC, did they send you any kind of receipt notice with EAC number on it?

Do we have to send a Signature Card and a copy of I-94 also along with the renewal applicatin to VSC?

Thank You

Yes they sent a receipt notice that looks similar to all other receipt notices sent by INS. It has its own EAC number.
I sent my application on Sep 20. On the receipt it says RD: Sep 23, ND: Sep 27. Yes, I sent everything that is mentioned on the EAD (I-765) form. But online version of the application does not have signature card. On INS website (Forms section) there is a place to request the form by mail. I did that. It came with the signature card. I filled it out (actual form is just one page) and sent it with $100 personal check and other documents and pictures as specified in the instructions.

Kiran, Thanks a lot for the prompt reply. I have one more question:

Exactly how many days in advance, you send your EAD renewal application? I mean I would like to know whether we can send this renewal around 120 days in advance, before the current one expires?

Thank You

You are welcome buddy. You should send it atleast 3 months in advance. No problem if you send it early. They renew it only from the expiration date. I made a mistake of waiting till only 5 weeks are left. Now my EAD is expiring and still I donot have the approval yet.

Kiran:

I am not 100% sure about this, but you should not worry. I applied for my second EAD 2 months before expiration.

Did not receive approval or a card until one month after expiration. But the card was dated correctly - so the month that I thought I was not "covered", I was. I was not too worried because I have an H-1 as well (and I had received the Adv Parole within 2 weeks of the application!).

I believe it is enough that you apply in advance, which you have done - so the card will be dated accordingly.

Hope this helps...
