Can I choose the oath date?

Guys I know nobody will think this after going through the misery with USCIS. But I have a situation that forcing me to do that.

I want to take interview but don't want to take oath on the same date. I want to take oath after 1 month. Basically I will give the interview and then want to go to India and come back and then take the oath. It was preplanned to go to India but interview letter came in between. If I take the oath I will loose the GC. So I have to obtain US passport and Indian visa which will take at least 10 days. and I don't have that many days.

Now I would like to know how risky it would be not to take the oath on same day? Can I postpone the oath date at least by month?

Many people have taken the interview in this board. My question to them is do you really get option to choose your oath date? or they will dicate that?

Who can make US passport ready by 1 or two days? Any phone number? How to get Indian visa on the same day without going to consulate?

I wish they would all offer the oath on the same day :D

I see your dilemma. You could probably tell them that you will not be able to take it right then and explain why. I am sure they would accomodate you. However, you may not get to pick the actual date. You would have to settle for the next available slot.

I may be wrong, but what if you take your Naturalization Certificate with you and show it at the Port of Entry when you return to US explaining why you don't have an US Passport? Just a thoght. :)

can you travel with naturalization cert when india doesn't support dual cz?

do you need to surrender your current passport after oath?

do you get naturalization cert on the same day?

No, you cannot travel to India with just the naturalization cert, you need to have visa or PIO or OCI. To obtain any of these travel docs, you need to have US passport.

No, You do not surrender your current passport. But you need to get your passport cancelled by the Counsulate General of India Office. They will do it automatically when you apply for the visa/PIO/OCI and include your Indian passport with the papers.

Yes, you do get your naturalization cert on the same day on of your Oath.

Solution to your current dilemma is to postpone your Oath, which I heard is simple, until you get back from India so that you can travel, but definitely appear for the interview.

Goodluck!!!

I may be wrong, but according to the website they said that taking the oath the same day didn't confer alot of meaning to the new citizens hence they started performing as if it is a graduation ceremony. double check with your DO. if my thinking is true then you will have no problem to travel.

What do you mean?

If you do the interview, and ask the officer to delay the oath to accommodate your travel plans, then make sure you still have someone here checking your mail, and there is anything from USCIS to open and let you know what it is. The only downside is, if they still mail you an oath letter while you are away and your miss the oath, you risk abandoning the whole process! There have been a few cases like that. Just remember, you are still a PR, until you take an oath!

My suggestion is just take the oath, if it's offered on the same day. Passport can be secured in 1 day at Regional Passport Agencies with an appointment, if you have travel plans with in 14 days, or if you need visas. You can get an Indian visa on the same day if you go to the Consulate/Embassy. You ask for expedited handling, and do the express mail both ways, you will get the visa by mail in about 2 weeks. For India, visa rush is bad in summer (April-July) and in December/Early January.

Good luck!
