Can I apply for EAD if I lose my current job

Hi All,

I am currently working using my H1-B. I filed for my 485 in May,
2002 (and had not applied for EAD).

Things are looking a bit shaky in my company and there is a
slight chance that I may be liad off. Since I don't have an EAD
currently I wanted to check if I can apply for my EAD after I lose
my job.

Or is it advisable for me to apply for the EAD while I still have
the current job? (The only problem is, according to the company
policy I have to go through the company's lawyer who is charging
a hefty amount to file for the EAD & AP).

Appreciate any thoughts on this.

Thanks very much.

YOU DO NOT NEED TO GO THRU YOUR LAWYER. EAD application has nothing to do with your current employment situation.
Go ahead and apply for EAD ASAP if you think you will need it to get another job.

Hurry!

Don't wait until you lose your job. If you lose your job from your sponsoring company who filed I-485, you need to have EAD to work for another company. It may tale atleast 90 days to get a IEAD after you apply for an EAD application.

To apply for EAD, you would need copies of I-485 Receipt, I-140 Approval notice . If you have them apply it on your own.
All the best!

As everybody suggested you can apply for EAD yourself. Even though it is involved with money, since you have a choice I would suggest you do it through your company attorney itself. It is better all the paperwork goes through either same attorney or some attorney. (Just in case of any quries, RFEs etc..)
