Can F1 Visa renewed when on OPT ?

I am working on OPT which is valid till April 2009. My F1 Visa expired in June, 2007. I need to travel to India in August, 2008. I understand you will need valid F1 visa to reenter.

Is it advisable to travel on OPT ?

Can I renew my F1 visa if I go India to reenter US?

I highly appreciate any suggestions. Thank you.
 
I've always heard it's not a good idea to travel on OPT when you need to get a new visa stamp/renewal.
