Can a person have both H4 and H1B?

I work for X company and my wife works for Y company. Currently I am in US through H1B, my company is processing H4 visa for my wife. But her company is planning to process H1b visa for her after some time. Now if she gets the H4 visa and at a later stage if she is applying for her H1B will her H4 visa gets cancelled or she can have both. To travel immediately for to be with me, she needs the H4 and then she might have to work for her company at a later stage of time through H1B.

Basically I would like to know whether she can have both H4 and H1B. I read through the FAQ and I am under the impression that we can have multiple visas. Is that true?

At any point of time it's the I-94 that assert your status. Please note a new I-94 overrides the earlier one (even it is staill valid).

So in your wife's case, her initial status will indeed be H-4, but later she will transfer to H-1B from the start date mentioned in the I-797 approval notice.
