Question
Can a noncitizen obtain a Social Security number to get a drivers license?
Answer
No. We no longer can assign an SSN to a noncitizen solely for the purpose of obtaining a driver's license.

Noncitizens otherwise ineligible for an SSN can, however, obtain one for purposes other than employment when-

* A Federal statute or regulation requires the noncitizen to provide an SSN to get a particular benefit or service; or
* A State or local law requires the noncitizen to provide a SSN to get general assistance benefits.

We shouldn't confuse non-citizens with illegal (or out-of-status) aliens.
Many non-citizens (not only LPRs) are in legal status and have the right to obtain a SSN.

Or you can get a letter from social security that you are not elligible for a SSN, like spouses of students or H1B and can get a DL.

Oh I dunno, I was at the site looking up the local Social Security office address and stumbled across that, and thought I'd share.

Anyway, they didn't have my wife in 'the system' yet, so they pushed us out empty handed, no SS card. We were given the standard 'contact us if you don't get it in a month' yadda yadda yadda.

Sadly, most employers require that little paper 'gold' to seal the deal.
Along with the NJ DVM for licensing, and our bank.. etc.

The waiting is so frustrating.
