Can a green card interview be re-scheduled?

I am a Canadian citizen of Indian origin. My mother is a US citizen, and filed for my green card, in 2001.

The I - 130 has been approved and I got a letter from the National Visa Center to pay the affidavit of support (AOS) fee plus the processing fee. I paid the fees a few days back.

I assume the INS might process the application & call us for an interview in 4 or 5 months.

My wife is likely to visit India & stay there for 3 or 4 months.

If she is away when the the interview letter arrives, can I request INS to re-schedule it for a later date? Would INS need documentary evidence for the reason?

Thanks!

You can, but it's highly recommended not too.

Ive read far too many stories on other forums of people who have 'rescheduled' their interview, only for USCIS not to note this change and then deny them for failing to show up at the interview- it's not a recommended route and will be a lot of work to reverse the decision should this happen to you.

Can't people check up their interview dates and reschedulements online with their reciept numbers or case numbers?

Absolutely NOT!!! USCIS website contain status update of cases, which is generic information w/o much teeth to it. It would be a disaster for USCIS to provide the capability to reschedule interviews via their website, it will be the worst thing ever. In short, you cannot reschedule anything via USCIS website.

CANUSA18,

Be advised that rescheduling your interview with USCIS because you want to manage the case as opposed to them doing their work, you risk being disappointed and held up by USCIS bureaucracy. Whenever you are scheduled for an interview, just make sure you attend or you will be on this board complaining about lack of progress in your case. It is possible your request to reschedule the interview will be received by USCIS and never processed, and later on, you receive a denial for failure to appear for interview. USCIS is one crappy organization, and you deal with it at your own risk.

Which consulate will you be interviewing with? One in India, or one in Canada?

Anyway, DO NOT reschedule the interview. Green card interview rescheduling is fraught with horror stories -- people being denied for not showing up, or having very lengthy delays for the next interview. Both of you must be prepared to show up at the interview whenever it happens.

At this stage, the interview is likely to be in the next 1 to 3 months.
