A leading transcontinental moving company has statistics showing that the outmigration from California in 2002 was only about two thousand families more than the inmigration.
If people were rational California would be losing population massively, but of course they are not rational. They are still looking for warm weather and the good life, without the restraints of midwestern conformity and convention and boredom.
Actually California is a disaster already in the making. Thanks to excessive inmigration, both legal and illegal, its population has tripled in a short couple of decades. Its budgetary problems are well known, with a deficit at this moment bigger than that of the other 49 states of the Union.
The smog which had been getting less oppressive is now headed in the other direction -- towards the greater pollution of the lungs of Californians. There is just too much development for this problem to be solved short of deporting half the population back to the midwest.
The kind of people leaving are those who pay taxes and pull their own weight. Those coming in have too many children, too many illnesses, too many social problems for the California infrastructure to handle in a satisfactory manner.
The Golden State is becoming one of the northern provinces of Mexico, the most corrupt and hopeless nation in the Western hemisphere. I seriously wonder whether we should not cede it to Mexico legally before it drags the rest of us down for good.
The air is foul, the beaches are polluted with the waste and excrement of countless cities which have no funds for their treatment except to let them flow to the ocean. There will soon not be enough water for its extensive agriculture. Choices will need to be made between the needs of plants and the needs of human animals. Plants of course will win.
Its schools are overcrowded and understaffed. Its colleges and universities are at the limit of their resources and no additional resources are going to be available in the near future.
Its prisons are overcrowded with convicted criminals, both serious ones and those merely caught in the culture of drugs, but there is no way to care for them properly short of killing half of them and letting the other half go free.
The political class is made up largely of Democrats beholden to the Hispanic masses who have not even reached the level of the Spanish invaders of the 16th and 17th Centuries, largely Indians with a superficial smattering of Hispanic culture and language which does them little good. It is as if the state were invaded by barbarians from central Asia circa 1200 AD.
I am mystified why so many civilized Americans stay in California under these conditions. Only great wealth in a few enclaves near Los Angeles and San Francisco can shield one from the savage barbarism of the state's masses. No one below the level of filthy rich can really live comfortably any more. The state is fine for Barbra Streisand but not for more typical Americans.
The Catholic Church contributes to the problem in that it welcomes Hispanic immigrants, most especially the poorest and the most illegal, even allowing its priests and nuns to smuggle them in across the porous borders. But it will shortly itself run out of funds, having so many child molestation cases to settle and social services to provide for those who are willing to work but are not willing to stop having children. No Mexican ever heard of birth control -- and not because he fears the Church's opposition. He only listens to the Church when it suits him. Protestant evangelicals have been making special efforts to win the religious favor and allegiance of Mexican immigrants. They are most welcome to them! They won't stave of bankruptcy for long.
