Bringing parents to US.

Hi all,

I know this might not be the right place to ask such questions but there are lots of knowledgeable people on this board and hence I decided to ask.

I plan to get my parents here ASAP but it will be 6-7 years if I wait for my GC to be approved and then wait for citizenship and then start their process. Any one of you is/ has been in such a situation and know a shorter route.

I thought about getting the Canadian GC (or whatever they call it) for myself and then for my parents but I am not sure where to find more details on that route and what kind of a time frame is involved with that route.

Please share your views.

Thanks,
BR

It depends

Current average processing time for Canadian PR is 18 months. If you apply for your parents assuming that they are in India it will be an additional 3-4 years. So it will be about 5 years before they can join u in the US - if the current free borders between Canada and US still exist at that time.
If you wait for US Citizenship it will be about 6 years before u can even apply for their immigration.
Your best bet for the present (this is something I have done) is to get your parents here on a visitor visa. They could be here 6 months and India for the other 6 every year until u get your US citizenship.

Thanks Jibran.

Are you sure that Candian PR is taking about 18 months becuase I saw some immigration attorney's ad n SiliconIndia magazine guarantying approval in 6 months or money back.

And does PR for parents takes longer (3-4 yrs) compared to the primary?

Do you have any site where I can do more research on these?

Thanks,
BR

Hmm ... nobody should trust any attorneys who can guarantee approvals from government bodies!
Read the fine prints and most likely - you will say good bye to your money!

I though of this already. Best bet is to wait for citizenship and then sponsor parents. I saw on Murthy chat that there will not be any waiting time for immediate relatives. Probably I can get them on parole after I sponsor them.

Until that time, we have to manage on Visitor visa.

Thanks Krishnagc. Can you please elaborate on "I can get them on parole after I sponsor them."?

Does it mean you can get them here as soon as you get the citizenship and applying for their GC without waiting for the approval?

Thanks,
BR

Yes. Thats Correct. We can get a parole if a status adjustment application is pending.

I am not sure if there is an equivalent of I-140 for family based petetions. In such a case, we may have to get that approval before applying for status adjustment. Hopefully it will not take long.

Rohit,
Go to http://www.tcscanadainc.com/wwwboard/index.html
At this web site you can post questions the same as here related to canadian immigration. It takes an average of 18 months currently if you are applying from the US. The ad that you saw must be old or misleading. It took 6-8 months back in 98-99 now it takes longer...same goes for the applicants from India - previously it took 1 1/2 to 2 years now it is 3- 4 years.
