Bring copies of documents to interview?

Should I make copies of important documents to take to my citizenship interview?

For example I am bringing my tax returns paperwork - is there any chance that the interview officer will ask for a copy of those to keep?

For tax, you better request and obtain Tax Transcripts from IRS. It is free and it usually takes 2-3 to get them. Just call 1-800 IRS number and request transcripts for last 5 years (explain them you need this for immigration application). A copy of federal returns can help, but USCIS can not validate them as they are not produced by IRS.
In my case, I also brought a copy of state tax return (as my state revenue agency did not offer tax transcripts) plus reports on property tax/receipts (in case you own property). Hope this helps.

Why this is important: it provides a documentary support for tax and residency related questions (eg. if you stated, you did not fail to file a return, you do not owe taxes, never claimed to be non-resident, etc). Also, if you apply on 3 year rules- marriage, a joint tax return is a good support for the state of marriage- union.

In my case the IO asked for several pieces of evidence in addition to what I had submitted with my application. He looked at both original and copy and kept the copies. The copies became part of my application file and he numbered them in sequence like all the other pieces of paper that are part of the application.
I would assume that if you don't have copies they will need to keep the originals which may or may not matter depending on what it is (utility bill versus original deed on a house).
I applied based on 3 year/marriage rule so I had to prove my marriage to him. I think for 5 year rule applicants the evidence required is much less.
My advice would be to follow the instructions on the interview checklist you get with the interview letter.
