Bogus priority dates and why they set them

If the priority dates are so far back because there are so many people waiting that long, they should have been approving those people. But just about nobody has been approved this month.

They set dates so old that nobody has them, in order to stop I-485s being filed, which would lead to many people leaving the US because they lost their job and don't have EAD, or leaving just out of frustration (especially if they have a spouse who cannot work because of the lack of EAD). Then once they are satisfied that enough have been shaken out of the process, they'll start setting more realistic dates and resume actually approving people.

Remember they don't really want us here. They view immigration as some kind of charity they are doing for people from poor countries, not as a way to enrich their country with skills and knowledge. The heavy bias for family-based immigration over employment/skills-based shows that. The annual total of family-based immigration is more than triple the employment-based. It would be the other way around if they were more interested in increasing the skill base of the population.
