Birth/Marriage Certificate Issue

Just came to knoe that the Indian Embassy is also issuing the Date of Birth and the Marriage Certificates for the Indian Citizens.
Can somebody verify whether these Certificates are accepted as a valid documentation by the INS for I-485 processing.

I think, the certificates issued by Indian Embassy are not acceptable to verify your DOB/Marriage. I can site the following reason for this:


1)DOB at the Embassy is issued based upon your Passport
2)DOB on passport is issued based on your 10th Std. School Certificate/Ration Card
3)DOB on School Certficate is issued based on well "nothing", just parental knowledge etc.

Therefore, INS requires DOB be issued by the hospital/doctor from the place you were born.

Else, other documents like affidavit/non-availabilty document etc.

As far as i know, the birth certificate obtained from the Indian embassy is a valid document which the INS will accept.
I am not sure about the marrige certificate. Do they even provide a marrige certificate.

Birth Certificate

I think valid birth certificate is from corporation/municipality in India which is issued based on your hospital record. Mere hospital record will not work. It is the same way out here in US-- I mean I got my daughter's birth cert. based on hospital record and her US passport was issued based on the birth cert. not on hospital record which was basically unacceptable. experts correct me if I am wrong.

I have seen several cases in this forum where INS does not accept the birth certificate issued by Indian Embassy.
I know one of my friend has been asked to come with the affidavit/birth certificate issued by the Concerned Local Govt authorities in charge of your birth place.

But as you know each IIO is different in processing.
If you have luck,you may be able to get your approval based on your school leaving certificate like me by Gods' grace.But I had the marriage certificate issued by the church.To be on the safer side try to arrange these certificates in the meanwhile.
