Birth Certificate Translation for US Passport

Hello All,
I had applied for Passport's for my wife and Son, 3 weeks back, expedite, today I recieved my wife's and not my Son's. I called the agency and they said, they have sent me a letter to send a translate copy of his Birth Certificate. His Birth certificate which we sent was already BILINGUAL in English and Kannada, so dont know what else I can do. I am yet to receive the letter so dont know the exact verbage....

My question is do I need to go to a certfied translator, or can I just translate the document myself or from a friend and get it Notarized. Any body who sent a translated copy for US Passport, please share your experience.

You can try explaining that the birth certificate is bilingual to start with (and that all they have to do is look for the english parts).

In the US, there is no federal or state certification for translators. Generally "certified" translations that you find online will include a notarized translation of the document along with an affidavit and a curriculum vitae from the translator.

If they insist on a translation, you can ask them if you can do it on your own or if you need to get the translation from a specific source.
 
I thought that they spoke English in Kannada ;) so there would not be a need to translate into English. Of course, I'm just kidding. I find it funny that if the certificate is bilingual English/Kannada that they would still need translation. Perhaps it was an employee that was half asleep the day he/she looked at the birth certificate. I would wait to receive the letter and see what they say. It seems from other posts I remember reading that certified translation is not the same as notarized document, that a certified translation is one that is signed by the translator asserting that he/she is fluent in both languages and that the translation if correct.

You can translate the document yourself. At the bottom, write a statemnt certifying that you are fluent in both languages and take it to your bank and have them notorize it for you (they'll do it for free it you have an account with them). I've done this with my birth certificate and that of other people.
 
It is a mistake on thier part. My birth certificate is in english and Kannnada too and i had no problems.
 
Are you sure there is nothing written in Kannada. Might be that would have triggered for this even though the name and dob/dobt might be in english.

reason, I am asking is it happens in Tamil Nadu some places they fill every thing in tamil unless you ask for it.
