I don't have a birth certificate and I need to file for my I-485. I have heard that indian consulate issues birth certificates based on passports.

1. Is that birth certificate acceptable for filing I-485? My lawyer tell me get 2 affidavits and a letter from local athorities?
2. Will the certificate issued by the consulate acceptable?

Also, has anybody tried getting a certificate from the indian consulate? Is it risky as the orignal passport is being sent in mail for getting the certificate?

Please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Yes it is acceptable. Many of my friends used it and they got their GC. One of my friend got REF for birth certificate. He took it from Indian consulate and sent to Tx SC, his green card was approved next day.

You can submit 485 with the birth certificate from consulate, and then have a back up of affidivits, if USCIS ask for it, you can submit later, if they do not ask, it is good. I have got example of affidivits from an immigration website (specially for India):
