birth certificate/name change

Hi,

My first name on the my birth certificate is different than what I have used since kindergarten. All the other info such place of birth, birthdate and parents name are correct.

My attorney is advising to file with local county court for a LEGAL NAME CHANGE ie apply to change my name from the ONE on BC(which I have NEVER used for any official or other purposes) to what I used since Kindergarten.
Will this be sufficient for consular processing? ( Mumbai consulate)

Thanks in advance.

I had an Umlaut in my surname and changed it (from oe to o)officially at the local municipal just to be on the secure side. It took quite long here in Germany -- almost 6 weeks.

I was in a similar situation...where my first, middle and last name were interchanged on my passport by bombay passport authorities when i got the passport in 1995 and i realized only in 2003. And I did as recommended by Indian embassy which is placed an advt in local news paper in USA and in Economic Times in India and then waited for 30 days as per requirements and then applied for a new passport which i got within 4 days!

Does your passport have the name as per BC or as per all other documents?

Thanks for the feedback!

My passport and ALL the documents except my birtg certificate carry the same first name.

I am going to go ahead and change my first name at the local county courthouse ( takes about 8 weeks...intial ad in papers for any objection...and so on)...hopefully then I would not have a problem with my CP.

Thanks again to all
