Birth Certificate from African Country

I am an Indian Citizen born in an African country and my folks moved soon after my birth. My I-485 (employment based) is pending and I have received an RFE which says "the copy of the form you submitted from ..... is not a civil birth certificate".

However I have been using this document as my birth certificate, which is from the hospital and prepared on the date of my birth.

USCIS is not asking for affidavits etc.., they require a birth certificate and it is not possible for me to visit this country on such short notice

I would like to know if anyone has had a similar situation and whether you obtained an official birth certificate from the country embassy or appropriate government. Any suggestions are welcome.

Normally hospital record is not considered as birth certificate by USCIS. Therefore you need to contact the appropriate civil authority to obtain your birth certificate. If you cannot obtain your birth certificate, then you should provide affidavits of birth from your parents/relatives. Also, provide some kind of secondary proofs - like school certificate etc.

Though USCIS did not ask for affdavits, but they are acceptable for I-485.
