Birth certificate for I485

Dear friends,
My lawyer wants to apply I140(NIW) and I485 at the same time. I am not sure if the hospital in India where I was born, still exists. I have lost touch with my relatives in that city. My lawyer suggested that he would use the passport instead of birth certificate for I485. Has anyone successfully used the passport for this purpose. Is it even allowed or the lawyer is just making it up. Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Wrong forum.

Your lawyer is wrong. In the absence of a BC, you need signed affedavits by people who know you (e.g. parents, grandparents, etc.). Check out the AOS forums. Plenty of info there.

This time you seem to luck out - you dont have to wait six months to find out that the attorney likely sucks!
I talked with quite a few attornies about the same issue about birth cert - however, it semed to be common knowledge among all of them that in the absence of BC, one can submit an affidavit signed by 2 peolple (I think it was 2) that were present at the time and know you (something like that) ---however this passport copy substitute is a new one!!! Please talk to a couple more qualified attornies (in your own interest) before you hand your future to them.
