Best Job Title to go under for TN1

Hi Guys,

I have a job offer in the US and planing to go for my TN1 visa this week. I have a Foreign Degree in Engineering with a major in Electronics (have my evaluation done) The letter from the employer has the job title as 'Computer System Analyst'. My work experience matches. I have about 10 yrs of experience in the field. So my experience and the job title match well.

But it looks like INS looks for a proper match of the degree (Something like computer science or computer engineering).

1. Would this be a serious issue.
2. Whats the best category I should choose if its not going to be System Analyst considering my qualification.
3. Should my degree be evaluated also as 'Postsecondary diploma' is Computer engineering or computer science as I have done few 6 - 7 courses related to computer science/engineering. That way I could still justify that I do fit in as a Systems Analyst.

I really would appreciate if any one could throw some light.

Thank You!

what about System Engineer? you may have a problem for the System Analyst title (believe me when i say it, it would all depends on the officer and his/her mood) you would be better off if you stuck to Engineering titles. also, i have to tell you this. i met a guy who graduated from China and they send him back because they wanted a Canadian Evaluation for his degree (not the US evaluation, just the canadian evaluation) so if you have it make sure you take it with you

sshakeny is right! prepare both canadian and US credential evalution with you, and check the evaluation center that recognized by homeland security otherwise the officer will turn you away ( it depends the officer ) Goodluck!

the border officer told the gentleman with a Chinese degree that since the TN is for Canadians he needs to know if his Chinese degree is equivalent to a Canadian Degree.

Thanks for that tip on the Canadian evaluation. I would try and get it. I suppose then having both evaluations should not be a problem.

I agree System Analyst is kind of risky with an engineering degree.

But coming to the job title itself can an Electronics Engineer show himself as a 'Software Engineer'?

Does the 'Software Engineer' come under the broad category of 'Engineer'??

Caution,

Get an American Equivalence of your degree not a Canadian one. It will be better for you in the long run. There is a thread on here about someone who had an evaluation done in Toronto and DHS did not like the equivalency. The person tried to get it redone by a US agency but once the Canadian evaluation had been shown they could not get in with the US one. Get the US one.

Yeah I do have the US one already. I have to get the Canadian one. UFT gives it in less than 48hrs at a cost of $300. So I was wondering. The odds of loosing money is better than being sent back? Thanks guys.

One of the factors for which title to choose (Engineer or Systems Analyst) will depend on whether your letter shows how you qualify for the job based on education and experience.
