What is the benefits of becoming a USA citizen? A right to vote doesn't seem a convincing enough reason to me.

Is Green Card holder protected at work place, against crime? Can a Green Card holder file a law suit against American citizen on harrassment, defaming, discrimination etc?

Thanks,

Some other major benefits include:

1. Eligible to sponsor spouse for a green card in a timely fashion (as oppose to a 5-6 year waiting period for spouses of green card holders)

2. Eligible to sponsor close family members for a green card

3. Freedom to travel outside the US for as long as you want without any restriction

4. Receive US government protection and assistance when traveling abroad

5. Travel with US passport

6. You can't be deported

Less Property Tax

Joef,

I am not sure why Citizens are less taxed. what kind of taxes you are referring to. Please post your answer in detail. Appreciate your time

I think all aspects of benifits have been covered - also most of the federal and some state government jobs need you to be a citizen. Almost impossible to get a job in defence or high security area if you are not a citizen.

Freedom to travel is very attractive to me. You won't need a visitors VISA for most countries in Europe. Being from a third world country - I have seen scrutinized eyes at the airport when I have presented my passport ( blaming noone - nor my country or those people - I guess it is just the system).

Joef, do you really think a Green Card holder will be protected by law and not be discriminated against in any way compared to US Citizen?

The US passport may help in not needing the visa for some countries. But it may not help in reducing the scrutiny. A person's
color, ethnicity etc. plays a major role.

Joef,

From your post, it seems:
If a person filed I485 based on a future job -- the person is still in school on F1 or work for another employer on H-1B, And when the GC is about to approve, the person invokes AC21 (485 pending for more than 6 months, another job offer is similar to the current job offer), so he doesn't need to work for the sponsoring employee for a day and his GC should be fine and no problem to apply for citizenship 5 years later either.

Is that the case?

Thanks,
