Before Contacting A Congressman

Please check their scorecards on this web site first:
http://www.betterimmigration.com/thegrades.html

The name of the web site is VERY MISLEADING. Their mission is:
"Americans for Better Immigration (ABI) is a non-profit, non-partisan organization which lobbies Congress for reductions in immigration numbers. "

(This web site supports/promotes less immigration. Please be aware of the nasty icons they use to label/rate a congressman.)

The higher the score a congressman gets, the more anti-immigrant they are.
You would want to contact a cogressman who gets C to F.

It's not as bad as you think...

...some of the categories on their 'report card' are ' reduce illegal immigration' and 'reduce amnesties' - what most of us here need to hope for is a high grade in those areas for the representative/senator in question.

According to the website:
"According to the late stateswoman, Barbara Jordan, "Credibility in immigration policy can be summed up in one sentance: Those who should get in, get in; those who should be kept out, are kept out; and those who should not be here will be required to leave. ...for the system to be credible, people actually have to be deported at the end of the process."

The ABI grade on reducing illegal immigration is based on a Member's adherence to Jordan's standard "

Not condoning anything, but let's face it - illegal immigration is exactly that - illegal, and makes life more difficult for us 'legal immigrants' by redirecting resources which could have been working for us, to something else.

I would still be very careful in choosing which congressman I want to contact; I just don't want to waste my time in contacting a congressman who does not generally support immigration (regardless of illegal or legal).

This is how the website grades a congressman:

A+ Virtually always supports lower immigration and lower U.S. population growth

C Half the time has acted for lower immigration and half the time has acted for higher numbers

F- Virtually always acts to force higher immigration and U.S. population growth

One thing that deserves a closer attention is the "Worker Importation" category. It says:

Worker Importation
Probably the greatest damage to the wages and working conditions of American workers comes from foreign nationals who are specifically imported to compete with Americans for jobs.

The grade in this category weighs all actions that deal with permanent and temporary foreign workers.

Although temporary importation of foreign workers does not in itself cause significant U.S. population growth, it usually does because the federal government has done almost nothing to ensure that workers go back home after their work visas expire.

It is also a good idea to search on the Internet or read local papers on how a particular congressman has been involved in the immigrant community in your area.
