Can someone please explain to me the difference between a name check and a background check?
When you get the message that says "the results of your fingerprints have come in", what does this mean? Background check? Name check? I'm confused a little bit here....

Karina,

Where did you get the message from?

I mean last year after I did my fingerprints, after a while the status changed to "the results of your fingerprints have come in and the processing reaumed on your case.....bla...bla"
What did they check my name or that my fingerprints do not match any known criminal profile? I heard that those a two separate procedures: one checks if your fingers match with the known criminals and the other - "name check" is when they try to find out if your name is on any "shit" list? Do you guys think it is the case?

Karina, They are 2 different things. FBI check is to see if you have a criminal record whereas a Name check is to make sure your NAME Is not tied to any investigations, drug trafficking etc where usually fingerprints are taken because you may not be a suspect but are involved in the investigation...They are both done by the FBI.

As with fingerprints results, the USCIS sends your name to the FBI database and if there is a "NO Record" it means you are clear..but if there is a "hit", it either means a) There is more than 1 person who has the same name as your and is involved in some kind of investigation..or b) you are actually involved in something ...

If for instance you are a witness in a murder lets say..ofcouse they wont take your fingerprints but your name is in the FBI database..thats what USCIS needs to clear up..

Hope it helps.

Thanks for the clarification, wantmygcnow. My question is: was all of this done after the fingerprints last year?

No it wasn't done after the fingerprints. When a GC is ready to be issued(they have a visa available)..a name check is issued. Lots of 2000 applicants are tied in namecheck right now..thats the main reason for the delay..
