My wife and I will arrive in LA next month. She is pregant and want to delivery in LA. But we are new immigrants and don't have any medical insurance. What should we do?

Silly thing about that is, in our local Hospital in NJ they have a sign that they will provide medical care to anyone even if they don't have insurance.

Maybe someone in LA can tell you if it's the same there.

1. see this site for getting insurance.

2. check immigration.com and murthy.com forums for any suggestions

3. try calling up/emailing the hospitals and find out what procedure they follow as some accept patients with insurance and without insurance.

4. try reaching your community for any suggestions

5. try checking local emergency websites in cases like these.

7. talk to your lawyer and see if he has any suggestions

8. You have to act fast since you have one month only, so that you can plan better

Good luck.

Your wife needs to get prenatal care NOW.

If you have the means to pay for it, go to a family practicioner or doctor for obstetrics and gynecology and pay for the visit out of pocket.

If you don't have a lot of money, contact your county health department to refer you to a free clinic. You'll have to wait probably and the service will be hurried, but this is better than nothing.
Also, some university teaching hospitals provide free clinics. You will be seen by medical residents or students who work under the supervision of a licensed physician. Again, not quite the service you will get at a private office, but if you can't pay you have to take what you can get.

In LA, there are a number of county owned hospitals. They provide care for patients without insurance and limited means to pay. The service will be poor and you will share the place with all kinds of people, but the key advantage is that after the delivery the county hospital won't hound you for money or garner your wages.

Please:
DO NOT WAIT UNTIL YOUR WIFE IS IN LABOR AND THEN WALK INTO THE ER OF A RANDOM HOSPITAL. Yes, they are obliged to treat your wife and deliver your baby regardless of your ability to pay(EMTALA law), but they are free to make your life miserable afterwards trying to collect their bills. You are new to this country, having a good credit record is one of the most important factors in suceeding in this society. If you wreck your credit record with a $10.000 unpaid hospital bill, your life will be miserable for years.
