B2 visa until 2013 - return to country of origin in meantime?

Hi,

My B2 visa is appended to my boyfriend's H1B work visa, and expires in September 2013. The border guard in San Francisco stamped my passport with a 6 month stay in March (until Sept 2011). These are my questions:

Do I have to return to my country of origin (UK) when I leave?
Could I go to Mexico or Canada instead?
How long do I need to be out of the US before I can return?
Presumably I can make multiple trips back to the US within the period of my visa, providing I leave after each 6 month stay?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Your post makes it appear that you intend to leave and return quickly so that you can essentially live in the US on a B2 visa. It will not work and can cost you your visa. You must spend more time outside the US than inside it. You should expect to leave and not return for at least as long as the time you were in the US - preferably longer.

Why don't you get a job qualifying for an H-1B so you can legally live and work in the US.

Hi Concerned,

I have looked into an H1B visa but don't think I am eligible - not a specialist in the right areas of work. If the US embassy did not want me to live in the States, why would they append my visa to my boyfriends' and make the expiration date for 2.5 years time? This was done b/c I am a long-term partner.

I also have a British friend living in New York, her visa is appended to her boyfriend's 3 year international work visa. She leaves the US every 6 months and returns within a few weeks, has not had any trouble so far.
