B2 rejected -- now applying for B1

I applied for a B2 visa and was rejected and given the standard form in response, mainly on the grounds that I did not have compelling ties to my home country (Australia).

I am now wanting to apply for a B1 visa, being currently employed in Australia. My employer wants to send me to the US in a sales-related role for perhaps 3-12 months and we're hoping to apply under B1 status. However, I am unsure about what will constitute sufficient "binding ties" to Australia as I do not own property here and am un-married with no children.

I do have a girlfriend (US citizen, living in the US) that may count against me in terms of being a tie to the US and this may have been a contribution to my B2 refusal. Is this likely to remain an issue for my B1 application?

If anyone is able to outline exactly what documentation I will need for the application I'd be most grateful! :)

Thanks...

Jeremy.
