B1 validity after getting a new J1

Hi All,

My friend had a B1 10-yr multiple entry visa stamped for his first visit to the US. However, for his second entry a year later, instead of the valid B1 he had, he opted for a new J1 visa (he's a research scholar). Now he is planning to come back to the US for the third time and is wondering if he can use his earlier stamped B1 for entry, (his J1 has expired). its still not 10 yrs yet since he first got the B1 stamped.

Does getting a new visa in a different category automatically invalidate the existing valid visa. I know its true for F1 to H1-B status change, but not sure about B1 to J1.

any pointers would be appreciated.

Thanks,
AB

Could anyone reply to this... any attorneys on board? does a new J1 invalidate the exsisting B1? I heard that B1's validity cannot be superceded by any other visa. how far is this true?

Appreciate a reply!

Hi,
Just check his passport and see if his B1 has been "cancelled without prejudice". If it has he should apply for a new B1
