Awaiting I485 approval

I am waiting for I485 that was applied in September 2004. I have seen several I485 approvals that were filed in Oct 2004 - Jan 2005 period. I wanted to know as what should be my next step?

Do I contact the lawyer and ask him to inititate a inquiry?

Can I initiate a inquiry myself?

Should I send an email to FBI asking for name check clearance?

I feel very old when I see folks getting worried over 485s that are pending for 6 or 7 months ... we used to always talk in terms of years Not that its a bad thing, but still ......
