I just wanna share my experience recently using AVR. It worked!
I flew to Toronto nonstop last week. I stayed there for 3 days just to visit the country. I got bored so flew there. I crossed the Rainbow Bridge ( I just walked). It took 5 minutes for the officer to review my case. He was very nice the other two were kind of dumb and were not aware of the AVR (I guess they were newly recruited). It was freezing cold in Niagara when I crossed the bridge so I was like the only one inside the immigration (pedestrian area).

My case I have an expired h4 but have a valid F1 status (I came here when I was like 10). I did not apply for a visa when I went to Canada.

My suggestion!!! JUST BE CONFIDENT!!AND TAKE ALL COPIES OF THE AVR Provision! and yea don't turn in you I-94 the agent at the airport demanded my valid I-94 and I insisted that I'm not supposed to surrender it. ( I think she was aware of it but she was just acting kind of bossy).
