Automatic AP renewal at POE

I heard from a friend on the east coast that the Immigration officer at POE renews the AP for one year from the time of entry. And that there is no need for applying for renewal of AP. Just go out of the country to canada or India and your AP is renewed. He says he has proof of his colleagues who have stamps of renewal at POE.

Is it possible? If thats the case then why spend the money and time on renewal if you are planning to visit India.

I don't think so. It's called ADVANCE parole for a reason... you need to get permission IN ADVANCE of your travel to re-enter the USA and resume the processing of your 485. All they do at the POE is review your AP, then stamp your passport and I-94 with "AOS", and the validity dates should be the same date on the AP document. It is possible that the POE officer mistakingly entered a date on the passport stamp and I-94 for one year from date of entry instead of the final validity date of the AP. (This happened to me on a visa once at the POE, but my lawyer said it has no legality. Everything is based on the approval notices or documents the USCIS issues).
 
Officers at POE routinely stamp I-94 with one year validity irrespective of expiry date of AP. This does not mean anything.

For your own good, have a valid/unexpired AP BEFORE you leave the country.
