Australia DV-13 Slectee, Same- Sex Marriage Question.

I was selected in the DV-13 lottery and am currently awaiting for my interview with immigration in Sydney.

I am heading back to the States in December with the possible chance of marrying my partner (a US citizen). Being in a same- sex relationship, we would be able to legally get married, but I was concerned/ unsure if this would cause any problems or hassle with my interview.

Would I be able to get married and then inform KCC of a chance in my staus from single to married, or would I be best to hold off on getting married and wait until the interview process is over?

I would love to get married to my partner but don't want to do anything that could harm my chances at obtaining a green card through the lottery.

Any feeback would be greatly appreciated.

It's definitely tricky situation. But if i were you i would have postponed the wedding. if it's not a big issue for you to get married in a couple of months - you should wait. you don't want to risk, do you? but if you have doubts why don't you call either KKC or embassy. they should give you an answer. or maybe while in the states you could ask immigration attorney.

I`d just wait and do it after arrival to US.... Its still a very tricky matter since some states accept and others dont...

Kester,

Getting a green card by Diversity Lottery is HEAPS easier than getting a green card as a spouse. You'll get a permanent green card in the DV lottery, and you don't want to jeopardize anything with this by getting married and then essentially "hiding" that from the Immigration officer when you come in December. Go through your interview first. Get your green card. THEN get married.

I'm a US Citizen. My partner is Australian. Our immigration attorney strongly (and I mean strongly) encouraged us to WAIT until 1) my partner got a green card in the lottery or 2) DOMA is repealed.

The Supreme Court is going to CONSIDER hearing DOMA appeals on November 20th. IF they decide to hear one or more cases, that will probably be in January or February. They will, most likely, not announce their decision until June 2013.

Don't risk it. Get that green card and THEN get married!
