"Attempting to add a case that does not exist" error on USCIS case status service

I registered for automatic case status service online at USCIS. When I attempt to add my case number to the portfolio I get the following error:

==================
Validation Error(s)
You must correct the following error(s) before proceeding:

* Attempting to add a case that does not exist. Check the app receipt number.
=====================================

Has anyone come across this error before? Anyone know what this means?

Also each time I call up the national customer service center 1-800 number they say the automated system cannot find me. When I talk to a general customer service rep they say they need to escalate the case to a specialist. I then wait in the phone que anywhere between 30-60 minutes. Of course the last time I spoke to this "specialist" he told me that I have not been scheduled for an interview yet and it can take anywhere from 180 days or more.

I am done with my FP so how can the case number be invalid?

Anyone run into this problem?

Thanks!

This has happened to people before. Unfortunately, the online case status tool is not very reliable and useful for tracking N-400, N-600 applications, etc., even though, people say, it is very useful in tracking pre-GC applications. This exact case has been reported in this very forum before.

follow up

I called the National Service Center. My case number is not even in their automated system. The customer service rep always has to escalate my case. After being put on hold for almost an hour I got to talk to another customer service rep. I was told that my case was still with the Nebraska Service Center and that they cannot tell if FBI background check/name check was completed or not. I asked them why I get this "case does not exist" error online. I was told that the system is not updated regularly and that it tracks greencard application better than N400 applications. I asked her if my case number was right - I was told it was correct it is just that the system does not necessarily give information for every number.

Just wanted to share my experience with everyone - although what I found out was of no help :(.

So glad to find this thread... I have been having the same issue since July 06 now and finally i decided to be proactive and call the USCIS. The automated system could not pull my WSC*.... case and then i spoke with an agent. He could not pull my case with the receipt no. and thought maybe it was normal since the cases tend to "disappear" from their systems sometimes during the process. I explained to him that i have this problem from day 1. He was like let me transfer you to someone who is higher up in customer service and can access more info than him. After 30-45 mins, a specialist asked me for my A#. She said all looks good. I am like but no once can access my case with the WSC number and she was many people have complained about this and it is a known issue. She seemed in a hurry so did not want to press more. :rolleyes:

Anyone else with this problem?

I was one like you all....My case and my wife had the same issue

This is my take on this from a systems point.
The Online Case status system is different from the one that has ALL the case details. When you file a case at the Service Center they uplaod all your information. Then an extract file is taken with your case number and your case update alone and uploaded on to the Online Case tracking system. This way I think there is elimination of any possibility of hacking by nerds into the main system and causing havoc. That was a very smart thing to do. But the problem is sometimes some cases (maybe becos of bugs in the extract program) are left out in the extract and they never are inserted(new record created) on to the Online Case status system. So any updates that come in do not update. If they were smart they will have e3rror reports and reconciliation reports that will insert records when and update error happens with no record found. The thing they dont understand how the people who are left in the lurch feel when we dont see our case. This affects the Voice system too.

As to something reassuring I have seen that the mother system that contains ALL the details works normally like it sends out Name Check request (this is done b4 you are sent for FP), Fingerprint appointments are done, Fingerprint updates happen, Name Check (the black hole) do come back and update......

A trick I found when calling the 800 number is go with the option that you have not received the receipt....that will take you directly to the higher up and they will ask you why were you transferred here. then you say you are calling to find the status of N400...I think the option goes something like this. 1 for english,2;6;2;2;2;....

God Bless.....

Case Number Can Not be Found

I am in the same situation, too. My application was received at Lincoln, NE on August 18, 2006. Notice was sent to me on September 7, but ever since then it keeps saying "there is no information about this case in the system". After waiting patiently for two months, I finally called the 800 number today (November 14) and asked why. The first customer service agent said he could not find the LIN number in the system and had to escalate it to a higher level.

Then I waited for about 45 minutes, someone who sounded very courteous and pleasant picked up the phone and said he had no problem finding the case using the LIN number at all! He said they are waiting for the FBI name check back before they can send the fingerprint notice to me. He then verified my mailing address and assured me that everything was fine. The guy even chatted with me, asking where I was located and told me he was in Los Angeles, etc.

Well, thanks to this board. I am not in this boat alone! Hope we are getting there soon. God bless all of us!

He told you that he is waiting for the NAME CHECK to clear before issuing a FP Appointment? Or did he mean Interview Letter?

This is very peculiar, when did you apply?
