Attaching spouse application

If both myself and spouse are getting their GC processed through different companies at what point will we have to merge the applications? Do we have to merge the applications or Can we have separate applications ?

Also do you have to be on the payroll of a company to get your I-140 processed?

You don't have to merge. If you get the approval through one, send a letter to USCIS to abandon the other.

Also do you have to be on the payroll of a company to get your I-140 processed?
No GC is for future employment. So being paid by sponsoring employer is not a requirement.
