Asylum related issues

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and was referred to it by a friend.

I have a couple of questions and hope one of you out there knows the answer(s).

I was told by my attorney's assistant, whom I do not trust 100% because she has been pretty incompetent in handling my case, that the asylum office/ officer is the entity that has jurisdiction over it and since my asylum has been approved by that office, the INS cannot deny my permanent residence (greencard) after the interview. The interview is only a formatlity to complete the whole process. Does anyone have any opinion on this?

I have also heard that I can't return to my native country even after my permanent residency (greencard) has been approved. The customs/ immigration officer at the airport will take away your permanent residence status if you are found to have taken a trip back to your native country. Does anyone have an experience/ information about this?

Thanks for your help :)

Retuning to your home country

Lacey777,

About returning to your country with GC, there are two different positions.
One is what you said. You can't return until you are US citizen.
The other is that you can, It is not clear, but there is people in this forum that know others that have returned woth out problems.
In conclusion, No idea.

adjustment

I would not say that it is "only a formality". But unless an applicant engages in criminal/terrorist conduct and the like, he should not have anything to worry about. The only annoying thing for us is the ridiculuously long wait for a visa number to adjust.
