Asylum for mass arrest for political oppositions

Hi there,

Recently my country (Bangladesh) is going through a civil unrest. Around a 100 people, mostly protesting civilians (including innocent women and children) were shot and killed on the streets last month as the government issued 'shoot on sight' orders. A few thousand people were arrested and charged (indiscriminantly) because they are the opposition. The government further handed out death sentences to some opposition members that drew critical remarks from UN Human Rights, HRW, Amnesty International. etc in the last few days.

I published a book (2011), and wrote a pamphlet (2012) criticizing the current government's policies and activities. I have some news articles written quoting me discussing how inefficient the government has been in the past. Moreover, my family has been part of the opposition (my uncle was a federal agency chief who was forced to resign and charged with random crimes after this government came to power, never proven in court) and my father also was a military man for 30 years (colonel) and the current government is against the military (in 2009, they masterminded a mass killling of 73 army officers including 14 of my dad's coursemates at the military academy, they buried the bodies at a mass grave).

There are reports of others publishing similar things as me who got beaten up and tortured. My parents are leaving the country soon. I do not have any close relatives with who to live there. Males are constantly picked up by the state police and put in over-crowded jails. I will most likely be a HUGE target for the current ruling party since I oppose them, if they take me in and put me in these third-world, overcrowded, jails for even a week, I will die (no joke). I am getting my master's degree in the US, and won't survive back in Bangladesh in the current violence and civil unrest. Do I have a good case for asylum or should I not apply for it?

did any of your relatives have been executed or tortured or threatened because of being opposition ?

a lot of people living in bangladesh write articles against goverment in newpapers every single day.. asylum could be filed on this bases but you must have prove to show that why you particularly will be a target and also your case would be strong if you can prove that the current goverment threated you and have procecuted you in past, or has the intension to do in future.

if someone thretened your family/relatives because of your articles and you have proof that would help too. again in asylum you have to prove why you, particularly you, would be procecuted, what is probability of that happenig, so you would have to make case strong. as all of us know it is very hard to win asylum case, but not impossible

Yes, but none of them are in the US, and are NOT willing to go back to the US. I will particularly be a target because mine are not just articles, but entire book written to undermine current regime's policies. The government didn't have a chance to threaten me yet because I have not been back since writing that book.

Where is the writer of that book and what happened to him ?

i mean has he been tortured or threatened ? or anything ? and is he out now or living in Bangladesh ?

The author is me. And I have not been back to Bangladesh since the book came out in Aug 2012. Some other people who wrote against the government went 'missing' or killed in their houses. Hundreds were tortured. Thousands arrested and put in overcrowded jails.

come on you have a strong case.......if you can show that others authors were targeted........then it applies to you too...
gather documentation ...etc....

if you want my opinion , it is not a strong case , but if you are in a legal status , it deserves a try ,, collect the suitable evidences and write a good statement and hire a good lawyer and give it a try , but if you are not on a legal status you might be removed if your case was denied

all it depends how would you reperesent your case, how would the interview go and also if you will be able to convince the immigration officer, hire a good attorney and as i said it is never a waste to try it
