I was approved for asylum via I-730 while I was in the US. My paperwork got lost so it was a big disaster. I have a GC now but I still has to deal with NSC since they have my app and they did not have a centralized 800 number yet so I had to call the (407) number way back when and finally received a reply. It took about a year but things may have changed since 1999 which is when my I-730 was approved.

Did you always stay in legal satus while waiting for the I-730 approval?
Yes, I always maintained valid F-1 student status.
