As promise -- new feature for CSC tracking: online data registration form

Registered Users (C)
CSC folks,

The time has come. CSC tracking webpage finally has an online
data registration form!

I have been trying to provide this service to make data submission
(and my life!) a little easier for months. A registration form
was actually designed and ready to implement nearly six months
ago. However, for some reasons, I could never get the form to
work at geocities.com. A few folks have helped me look into the
problem with no success until I posted the question to Tzu (ND
03/01). Magically, Tzu solved the problem, and hooray, we finally
have it!

While this online registration will make data submission easier,
I would still like to keep the tracking lists in a somewhat
"controlled and monitored" style (which has always been the case
since we started tracking). We don\'t want people to play around
giving whole bunch of junk data which never get updated. Some
representative samples provided by one or two responsible folks
daily are sufficiently enough for tracking purpose. Therefore,
until we find a better solution, for the time being, after you
submit the data form, please either

include a valid e-mail ID (data field provided in the form); or
re-post your data to one of the discussion boards.

Note that you must do one of the two options above for us to
include your entry. Also note that the old ways of data submission
is still fine with me. That is, you can still send me e-mail or
post your data on the discussion boards asking for inclusion.
CSC folks have been exceptionally responsible for updating their
records. We hope this good tradition continues irrespective of
the form.

Thanks so much to Tzu for an excellent contribution to CSC
tracking webpage. I have nothing to reward you, but you are
guaranteed a spot in our "honorable" :) list of tracking
emeritus when your case is approved.

Finally, Tzu has agreed to help us improve other aspects of
the webpage. I will be working with him in the coming months
to bring folks a better service. There is no promise in time.
As soon as some improvements are made, we will let you guys
know.

Hi Ciba,

Thanks for the NEW feature. But i want to know how this is being handled. I am a VB guy and have some idea how this(web stuff) works. Always I used to think why can’t we automate and we might have Web developers visiting 485 discussion group and it should be a piece of cake for them to do this. But who has time (may be including me)?

You enter the information in the form then are you saving this information onto a text file and then retrieve the information.

I know the information is on geocities and you should be having limitations. If any one has as DSL connection then they will have a fixed IP address with help of the CGI (common gateway interface) program which can be Perl, ASP , Java etc have a form which can save the data to a file or to Access database. Once the information is in database then we can retrieve the information in number of ways. For a expert it should be a day job to setup this thing. If it is Geocities space I think we will not have the facility to run the CGI program at that place and I think we cannot have access database file.

Ciba your are right if they input wrong information then garbage into the database is garbage out. Now because you input the information so it is not a problem.

Thanks once more for your continues effort.

Hi NTR,

I have not had a chance to look into what geocities.com site
offers, but I suspect that the features they have are quite
limited (I only pay 15 bucks a month for the space. I don\'t
expect much anyway).

Tzu is looking into ways to automate updating process. He
seems to be an expert. My knowledge is only up to html and
some perl. That is all. :)

We will eventually want to automate the webpage to as much
extent as possible. The problem is that we all have regular
jobs to keep. Maintaining/improving the website can be very
time consuming.

Hi Ciba,

Giving suggestions is easy but implementing that is difficult. We cannot ask more as You already doing a lot for us.

Thanks.
