Hi,

My wife's brother is currently eligible to apply for citizenship, but he is worried because he had a number of traffic tickets and a couple times he was pulled over while driving with a suspended drivers licence. He spoke with a lawyer and he adviced him to wait a couple of years to apply for citizenship. I personally thought that only DUI arrests mattered and one should worry only if he was arrested on DUI. Please share your experiences in this specific case. Your help will be highly appreciated.

Thanks
SM:)

Well the problem is that driving on a suspended license shows the person has little regard for the law, so could be construed as lack of good moral behavior. In itself, the offense isn't a CIMT, so there is hope, but I think it all depends how the circumstances of the arrest is explained to the IO (i.e. did the guy know in advance he was suspended), and what mood he's in.

No not just a DUI will inhibit your N-400 at all. Many traffic violations will, even excessive speeding tickets (over a few hundred dollars) will. Hit and runs, your case of driving on a suspended licence will cause problems too. The big issue was driving and being caught several times on a suspended licence. Definatly not something that's going to look good in the interview. Lawyer is right, wait that one out and then maybe consult a lawyer down the road when re-applying...

Hi,
Thanks for the replies. All the traffic incidents were speeding tickets and the guy was just careless and did not care at that time but now hez worries :(. Well, This is a lesson for all the young bloods.

A friend of mine had 27 traffic tickets in one calander year. He is eligible for citizenship, but every lawyer he has spoken to...has asked him to wait five years after his last ticket before applying.
