Are all long-term TN liars?

Hi again,

This may sound like an insulting question, but I am trying to see the world like an American officer at the border.

A TN status is good for up to 1 year. At the border, if I am asked what my intentions are after the one-year contract, the right answer is "go back to Canada" (according to what I have read).

To be honest, I don't know if I'll be back to Canada after a year. My husband has a 3-year contract on a H1 (he's not Canadian). I'll probably renew my TN after a year or convert to H4. Our intention is to go to Canada permanently after 3 to 6 years in the US.

1) What could I say then? Is it risky to say that I plan to convert to a H4 after a year?

2) I wonder how it works for long-term TN holders. The answer "I'll go back to Canada after my TN is up" may be fine once or twice, but how can you convince an officer that you intend to go back to Canada after a year when this is your 5th or 6th renewal?

Thanks.

it's a check the boxes kind of situation. The border officers are looking for a particular set of responses from you, and you are supposed to give the correct response. Don't get cute with this. Just answer that you plan to return to canada at teh expiry of the TN. (it is true that you are planning to do just that at the very instant the officer asked you. There is nothing wrong with the fact that you changed your mind 1 week later.

Its not lying if your "short-term intention" is corroborated by a letter signed by your company.

You long-term intention may be something else, and as long as you keep this to yourself, you'll be fine.

Are you in the US now? Did you come in under an H4? If you did then why not do a status adjustment by mail?

Anyhoo... just keep it clean at the border don't volunteer any additional information over and above the questions the officer asks you.
If it were me I'd make the trip alone, no wedding ring(s), no children to add additional headaches or questions.
